Dr Oz ( and many MDs) on Chiropractic

Date: February 11, 2013 | Time: 12:29pm | Posted By: DrRandallMoore

On Friday I had a patient ask me why Chiropractic Care was on the Dr Oz show and how MDs feel about Chiropractic. The simple answer would be because "it works!" . On the other hand, these are really two very different questions and the answer is always dependent upon the perspective of the one answering as we well as asking the question.

This BLOG is because my patient was somewhat shocked at my answer.
"Chiropractic carries a strong feeling from both sides in our society, it questions very strong visceral paradigms for many, and substantiates them for others. Growing up, I had no use nor respect for Chiropractors! They weren't "real Doctors" and were basically "quacks" that got their license from a Cracker Jack box!" Can you imagine the look on her face as she stared at me? Now, how did I have that view even as a child? Well, of course, we get much of our early education and "opinions" from our parents. I explained that later in my college years I had used Chiropractic here and there growing up ( lots of headaches) but that I was pretty committed to Chemistry, Physics, Botany, and Pre Medical undergraduate programs. Being a smart patient, she asked the obvious question as to how on earth I had grown up with such negative attitudes towards Chiropractic, even began a pre-med program, yet, ended up a Chiropractor?

The answer, was in education!! I told her that at some point I had to get out of my box of "opinions" and give in to my own ignorance and decide to be open to an education. I had to realize that I was a bit dangerous..........yes, dangerous! A dangerous person being one whom is very opinionated while simultaneously very ignorant on a subject. I am pretty sure we have all met folks like this.

I gave her the example I had heard as a child wherein the neighbor had told my mother that her daughter was "cured" of asthma by getting her back "cracked" at the Chiropractor. Now,if that didn't elicit the biggest "bwahahahah haha haha" I had ever heard! Now, the neighbor was trying to help my mother with helpful information, yet this is how it was basically received, and why? Because of Education! The neighbor didn't know how to explain what she had encountered, but that it had helped. I get that, but said that "way," well, it certainly sounds "hokey."

My answer to my patient was that I had to go from hokey to scientific and do it in an open minded manner. I had to ask myself why so many went to the Chiropractor, what Chiropractic was "good for" (Conditions), and why I was finding some people went to their DC (Chiropractor) rather than their MD on the constant basis even with their kids. I said, "you see so many people, even MDs find themselves in my old boat, and if you don't get the proper information, then it is much like the tool you have never been taught to use, so you don't, and by the way, that compared to your usual tools, this one looks funny and weird, so not only do you not use the tool out of no knowledge, you also mock it out of strangeness based upon your then current paradigm."

I could make many more analogies, however my own story is a great one here, and very true. I had instructors at Chiropractic School that were MD's that at the time probably understood Chiropractic better than I did as a Chiropractic Student. The point being, that often information depends upon one's opinion from their paradigms.

So.................Dr Oz and general MDs on Chiropractic? Honestly Chiropractic hasn't really changed much since it's inception in 1895. Sure, some of us use different "tools" of our particular trade, however the biggest difference from DC's going to jail for practicing Medicine without a license in the 40's to it's now it being purported as a great treatment for low back pain on a Medical show, is social education and acceptability. The occurrence of "alternative" treatments being positively spoken of on a Medically-oriented show is a very positive thing for our society. This is because in terms of patient treatment, options are always a great thing! There is no "one size fits all" model for Healthcare. Patients need options and the freedom of choice to engage those options. Most importantly, patients need to be truly "aware" of their options.

So, to my patient, I have said that what you are seeing is an increase of awareness to many things that are non-medical and that it is this that is most responsible for the inclusion  more than the "advancement" of most "alternative" fields of healthcare. That in the end, both my Medical Friends and myself are great at what we do, we are both well intended to the maximum benefit of all of our patients and their well-being. Both sides see fantastic success as well as failure in treating our patients, unfortunately this is why it is called "practice" in some ways. Very important, is that Medical and Chiropractic are very different "Paradigms" and that the "science" is there for both. The determining factor is what the patient's "needs" are. Perhaps my adjustments won't help a patient that is too far gone and needs surgery? Perhaps surgery isn't appropriate for a spine that could be "adjusted." We all need to better understand the application of differing paradigms and therefore treatment modalities. Chiropractic Works! That's the answer, it's mostly a matter of understanding "how" it works, and an acceptance that it does work societally. The current science IS there on this, just ask your MD Neurophysiologist. This is why Chiropractic was on Dr OZ.

In our office I can tell you education is ALWAYS key. Ask any patient and they will agree that this is our focus. Every patient must understand "what" Chiropractic is in order to determine if it the "right" tool. Personally, I have argued vehemently for different patients to both avoid and have surgery. (imagine the response I get upon calling the surgeons office and then line itemizing the reasons why a patient needs surgery based upon the MRI's I am looking at? Not usually expected from the Chiropractor)

The point is that proper care should always be what is rendered! Every situation is different, you don't call the Police, when your house is on fire, and you don't call the fire department when all you need to do is fix the door frame.

Lastly, I would point out what seems obvious, however is periodically ignored for some reason in our mindset as the "mincing of words."
*Patients are people with a condition, they are not their condition!
*All of us rely upon the body's own natural ability to heal itself! All Adjustments, Medications, Surgeries, and even Chemo-Therapy are given as no more than a modality of treatment to a body that that in the end will either accept or reject that treatment as either right or wrong for its particular needs.
*We all supply our treatment and then sit back and see what with body will do with it.
*Healing therefore, depends upon the patient! Medicine Works! Chiropractic Works! If properly applied, it all works.

Affordable Healthcare OR Affordable Insurance??

Date: January 16, 2013 | Time: 5:37pm | Posted By: DrRandallMoore

Let's propose something thought-provoking with regards to the "Affordable Healthcare Act" for just a moment!

To begin with, this is not a simple "for" or "against" universal healthcare blog, rather it is regarding the "concepts" of what it might mean to have real healthcare coverage.

Please understand, that if there hypothetically were aliens in space watching  humanity, and how we "care" for each other, well..............there would be some frowns. We need a system that ensures better "care" for everyone. Everyone needs to take part in a system that in turn "helps everyone." The great part is that our society is actually at a point where we are at least attempting true "altruism." And this is of course, is a huge leap forward socially speaking. It may not be perfect, however it is a start.

Now, in terms of my focus. Does the proposed plan really affect "healthcare" and thereby the "health" of our American society? We are all faced with having to gain "Health Insurance" whether we really want it or not, this will help to defer the costs among the larger whole of "covered" persons............lower costs, and some potential governmental credits = lower healthcare premiums, right? Yes, this can potentially mean lower Healthcare Premiums, but does that necessarily mean Better or lower Healthcare costs? Therefore, does Healthcare Insurance really necessarily equate to better health? Now, although I believe it a good idea to have insurance particularly for the potential catastrophic situation, we must realize that Health insurance is really "Sickness and Disease Insurance." Although we are finding more plans that will cover more of what they consider to be "preventative" services, lets face it, you can't just go asking for most healthcare services, such as Bone Scan, MRI, etc. without having first been diagnosed with a condition.  Basically, you already have to have a problem in most cases to then be able to treat the "condition." Therefore, most people only go to their Medical Provider when something is already wrong, and this is usually delt with by masking the symptoms ( not necessarily the problem itself) with some sort of Medication. Most people end up at their Medical provider between once and 4 times each year. This is the type of care we are attempting to "make more affordable." Is this really "Healthcare" though? Does this make one more healthy or decrease their risk of further debilitating disorders or even death itself. Interesting that the Cochrane Collaboration (www.cochrane.org) data shows that wellness visits to Medical Providers had almost no effect on the early detection and treatment of most illness nor a reduction in the mortality risk of patients. Now, this doesn't mean that Medical care isn't necessary, however perhaps the "type of care" and "frequency" of visits could be real indicators.

What about further considering the visit frequency to certain providers? First of all, which type pf provider? A Triage and sickness specialist? Or a Correction and wellness specialist? How many people could have avoided that spinal fusion surgery or organ transplant, etc. that was the result of cumulative effects over time? What if a Wellness Specialist were to see a patient potentially 10 times a year, what if more? Would one not agree that with more constant supervision, comes the greater chance of earlier detection and treatment? What if that wellness specialist were actually rendering smaller treatments and tweaks to a patients health along the way? Would those large problems they were to potentially face not now mitigated and potentially kept from getting bigger at all due to more constant small treatment and supervision?

The current way most Americans handle their health is much like getting the oil change on their care only once a year or when it starts to scream and shudder. What if you had a auto protection policy that covered unlimited maintenance, how often would we each take our car in? Some, may try every week, some monthly, some, it would make no difference to because they're going to wait for it to scream catastrophe anyway. Could we argue that the person taking their car in more frequently for check ups and/ or small tweaks is more likely to have their care run better (healthier) and likely last longer with fewer great issues? I think common sense says yes. Therefore, I would infer that our healthcare for our bodies is much like this automobile example. With that, the problem isn't so much making the current model "more affordable," but rather making a model that actually is preventative and effective, more "affordable."

What is more important, making insurance premiums that only allow for the same periodic "sick" care model more affordable, or facilitating a maintenance model for prevention as well as earlier detection more affordable? Again, if we compare this to our automobile model, it may look something like this:
(Example for "non-catastrophic" model of general use and maintenance)
Automobile Insurance Plan Choice 1                                 Automobile Insurance Plan Choice 2
Deductible:                          $500                                           Deductible:                   None
Co Payments per visit:         $20                                             Co Payments per visit:  None
Monthly Premiums:             $400                                            Monthly Premiums:       None
*$600 per month without Governmental assistance
Visit Limit:                           10 per year                                 Visit Limit:                     50 (or unlimited)

Total Personal Annual Expense using all visits available:
                                          $5,500                                          Annual Flat Rate:        $4,000

In the above example we would generally find that those "car enthusiasts" would be more likely to take real advantage of a perpetual maintenance program for the car(s) they love, whereas some who don't particularly think much about their car, wouldn't take much thought of this. What about those in the middle though? Those that didn't understand or perhaps didn't know maintenance programs were important much less available and how to understand their use? Well, education is the key, as with all things. No one, can use a tool they have never encountered or been taught how to use!

At first this seems unrealistic, however do plans like this exist? ABSOLUTELY!!! One only need know what to look for and where to look.

Our cars are important and I would propose that if enough people knew of plans like the ones above, then at the right price to have enough access to car maintenance, more people would certainly take advantage of them. This is the very same with our health. We tend to take advantage of the fact we think we are healthy and don't do much until something is obviously wrong. Kind of like waiting so long you need new tires rather than taking care of them the entire time. Well, we can't get New bodies, nor can we ever repair them, once damaged heavily enough, to the former 100 % functional status.

After all of my analogy to cars here, there seems to be one thing clear with current healthcare reform. The current proposals are reform of pricing of the current sickness model only.  Yes, this can make this type of care more affordable to those without even this, I get it, and yes, this is an important "aspect" of healthcare. However, what about affordable continual access to providers for less than catastrophic care and/ or maintenance?

I would propose the thought of a system of "Affordable" premiums, yes, but also affordable ongoing direct provider access and thereby improved maintenance.

This subject has the potential for great depth and breadth. This particular blog is designed not for that, however to stimulate "thought" on the matter. As well, to stimulate the reader to engage the idea that there are systems out there that actually function much like the proposed examples. That there are systems of maintenance that can often cost less than your health care premiums alone. As always, we welcome your input and questions, and hope that you find this subject thought-provoking and informative.

Fevers: Healthy or Dangerous?

Date: December 19, 2012 | Time: 1:01pm | Posted By: DrRandallMoore

It's that time of year where the FLU and other illnesses are fresh on our minds. This blog will briefly help you to consider what might be a "healthy" vs. "dangerous" fever. Obviously if you are ever uncertain and concerned especially with regard to your child, then you should always err on the side of safety and consult your healthcare provider as to the condition you or your child are suffering from as various causes exist for fever.

This post is due to the fact that I often find many of my parent patients being wary of any fever whatsoever and generally immediately suppressing fever at its earliest onset in both their children and themselves. Understandably as parents we want to protect our children from all harm, however is this what we are really doing by knee-jerk response with medications to reduce fever? I always work to explain "what" fever really is to parents so that they more appropriately know how to respond.

Although "fever" (body temperature over roughly 100 deg F, whereas "normal" is 98.6 deg F) can exist for many reasons, with regards to "illness", fever is a normal response to help the body's immune system to properly cope with an infection in order to "heal." Generally fevers do not get above 102 deg F and last for only a day or two. In these circumstances you must ask yourself if it isn't wiser to "let the temperature go" and allow the body to due its proper course of healing because when the fever is suppressed, all to often the healing response also is suppressed. Therefore, although your child may "feel" better, the body has yet to properly deal with the infection and this often can lead to a "recurring" illness in an individual who has never gone the full course necessary to heal the infection. Under these circumstances, this individual seems to always be sick in a recurrent fashion.

This Blog is designed merely to get you thinking as a parent as well as for yourself regarding fever. Obviously there are many reasons for fever, however it could be argued that the "usual" fever is a very healthy and necessary response by your body in order to "completely" heal itself. Again, if ever in question, then ask your health care provider to help you make the best decision considering your particular circumstances. Otherwise, give strong consideration to the potential over use of symptom relievers that may not only be unnecessary, but also have long term detrimental effects.

We always make ourselves available for questions on any subject matter. We hope that you find this thought-stimulating and useful! <view entire article>

Obesity

Date: April 10, 2012 | Time: 9:36am | Posted By: DrRandallMoore

Obese vs. "Normal" individual
Obesity is a grave problem in our American society. Note that it isn't just a "problem" on the outside appearance, it is also a tremendous problem on the "inside." This is a large topic that we could spend a lot of time on, however please note the amount of "fat" surrounding the internal organs and heart. Think that could contribute to high blood pressure, lack of breath, and poor digestion? And that is just the mechanical force of this fat on the organs, not to mention the "bio- chemical" problems involved such as Diabetes.

Although these images make it very obvious that there is a problem here. It may be easier to think of individuals (or yourself for that matter) as either in balance (Homeostasis) or not!
Balance = Healthy Imbalanced = Unhealthy
Chiropractic, Nutrition, Acupuncture, etc are all healing arts that focus in bringing the body into greater "balance" so that it can function and heal as it is supposed to. For that matter, even your typical Medical "symptom" care is afforded better results the closer the individual is towards balance. Unfortunately many of us wait and wait..................and wait on our problems until we are so out of balance with our body, that we then require a large degree of treatment just to get us a small percentage better.

How does Chiropractic fit into obesity? Well, consider that Chiropractors are the second largest leading health profession in the world behind "Medicine, " and that our primary focus in on prevention and maintenance of your health and well-being "before" you get sick. As well, we are focused on "correcting" the imbalances in your body that got you ill or in pain in the first place, rather than simply covering up your symptoms. Chiropractors are all trained in Nutrition as a part of their schooling (Chiropractic Hours = 120 Hours + ; Medical hours = 0).

If you are able to walk into our offices, then there is more "right" with you than "wrong" with you and you are capable of healing to some degree. A part of the Chiropractic Treatment regimen is often to modify your diet for optimal balanced function of your body. Chiropractors generally look at your body from the perspective of "4 Essentials" ( as in 4 essentials to life).
1. Proper Nervous system function 2. Food 3. Water 4. Air........................take any 1 away and you die, diminish one or more and you are out of balance and therefore not in a place of optimal health.

Do you really want to wait so long that those imbalances require drugs, surgery, or other severe interventions that could have been easily avoided?

Yours in health, wellness, and "balance",

Does Auto Insurance Cover Chiropractic?

Date: April 9, 2012 | Time: 4:02pm | Posted By: DrRandallMoore

This is a question we hear often. The simple answer is "yes." If you are involved in an auto accident, you should always make certain that you are evaluated by the healthcare provider of your choice so as to avoid any future pit-falls of not doing so at or near the time of injury. This is due to the fact that many injuries can be non-symptomatic for a few months to a few years depending upon the dynamic of the accident.

All states and Insurance companies recognize this fact and that is why you have a "statute of limitations" ( often 3 years) as to "how long" you have to submit a claim related to a particular auto accident.

Along with your standard Medical coverage, Chiropractic is also covered under your same plan. Therefore, depending upon your accident, make sure both providers evaluate you thoroughly........your Medical provider for immediate fractures, live-threatening injuries, etc. and your Chiropractor for the rest so that you have the best chance at your body healing itself as quickly as possible.

Remember, Healthcare is a TEAM approach and your being "healthy" is not always measured best by your "symptoms," especially following auto accidents, even "fender benders."

Basically, make sure to take care of yourself early, and not wait for problems to come knocking. The best healthcare providers will always offer free, no obligation consultations to determine if what they offer is appropriate for your particular needs. This is why we have always offered FREE consultations to those seeking appropriate healthcare for themselves and their family.

We have been treating auto accident victims for nearly 11 years now and make ourselves available for your questions.
More detailed questions, just give us a call.

Health and Blessings!

Keep Healthcare a CHOICE!

Date: September 21, 2011 | Time: 8:32am | Posted By: DrRandallMoore

It's that time of year again. Be prepared to hear the push for your annual FLU Vaccine. This particular Blog isn't about really whether you agree with them or not. This is strictly about choice.

I am concerned as a parent as well as a professional in healthcare that there are so many attempts lately to DISCOURAGE freedom of choice. California is/ has proposed vaccinating children as young as 12 with ALL current and future vaccinations WITHOUT NOTIFYING PARENTS. That's right, it would be legal for school officials to forcefully vaccinate your children AGAINST THE CHILDS WILL and WITHOUT INFORMING THE PARENTS. There will be no choice in this matter, as well as no culpability for ANYONE INVOLVED if there are any reactions!

Again, This isn't even about whether to do or not to do, however with such a heated topic of varying opinions, in this great country, shouldn't this along with many other decisions be just that............an informed decision. You see, more folks are "choosing" to not have these procedures performed, not merely not having them done out of apathy.

What is the condition of our social structure when I can be thrown in jail for not succumbing to something I choose not to do. Something that has no ill-effect on any other human being in a hurtful or deleterious manner by my personal decision and action? That as a parent, they won't even have to place you in jail for the night for your decision, but rather take that option away from you altogether. The government of California is quelling the opposition by stating "they" are footing the bill, and not the parents. Well, how do you think that is happening. They take your child, force a medical procedure on them that you may not agree with, nor have any responsibility financially for if something goes wrong ( that will be the parents responsibility), and the local government will pay for it alright...................with your tax dollars! Problem is that there are too many to profit handsomely from this type of arrangement. They can sell their product, have everyone forced to use, and have complete immunity from any potential lawsuits from use of that product. What other industry could brag of such a racket and monopoly?

The point is that this IS REALLY HAPPENING as this blog is being written. I would encourage everyone to educate themselves, and make their own choices...............and unfortunately now have to stand up and fight just to keep that choice alive.

Please take part in arming yourself with knowledge and freedom that make this country great.
A couple good starting resources are:
www.nvic.org (Public Awaress and legal group)
www.mercola.com ( Dr Mercola, DO)
www.drtenpenny.com (Dr Tenpenny, DO)
http://www.whale.to/vaccine/quotes20.html ( Dr Robert Mendelsohn, MD -Pediatrician)

**************these are MEDICAL and legal resources, because unfortunately although you as a patient may not know it, many of your healthcare providers don't agree with these procedures either. They don't have them done to themselves or their children, however their "contracts" with various hospitals state that they will at least "endorse" these procedures to the public and perform them as a part of their employment obligation!!
Very true, you may be surprised if you ask around a bit over a "comfortable" setting than in their offices.

This BLOG was written in the spirit of keeping our FREEDOM OF CHOICE ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!! <view entire article>

Ear Infections

Date: April 21, 2011 | Time: 11:55am | Posted By: DrRandallMoore

With the onset of Spring, there are pollens in the air. With that, every health care practitioners office is filled with allergy sufferers................but have we thought about the Pediatric patient? We also tend to see a surgence in EAR INFECTIONS at this time as well.

I am reminded by this while having a conversation with by daughters Principal about her own child's ear infections. She asked about Chiro Care and Ear infections. As far as symptomatic care goes, often times ear infections represent some of the largest case load of a Chiropractor, but not many people are aware of that.

She was pleased to realize that ear infections are often treated by Chiropractors usually very easily and quickly. Moreover I explained that while I do often initially gently "adjust" a child in their upper cervical (neck) as required, that I often help the child most by actually "teaching" the parents techniques for aiding to relieve the causal factors in ear infections.

Usually 1 or 2 adjustments and the "ear infection" is gone, not miraculously, but rather by the child's own natural healing ability and making that possible through a gentle adjustment.

The parents are always taught helpful home remedies such as:
How to gently mobilize the external ear
How to gently help lymphatic drainage
Temporarily ( at least) removing aggrivating factors such as cow milk, wheat, potentially
gluten or other "sensitive" foods until the infection clears up.
Homeopathic use as appropriate., etc.
**Although we are familiar with Antibiotic Prescriptions for ear infections, they are actually very seldom necessary with the right action taken, even the AAPP recognizes this and says the same. When appropriate, yes we refer for this as any good Doctor will do for their patient, but agian, this is the smallest minority if a child is taken care of correctly and wholistically.

New Office Space

Date: September 16, 2010 | Time: 8:15am | Posted By: DrRandallMoore

Well................so now we are marginally into the new space! We can function, but a lot of finish work to get done for sure. Remarkably the address has not changed.....wierd we know, however we were able to change things with the city so as to not change everything simply because of a "suite number change." Plus..........can anyone guess how difficult it is to change anything with insurance companies or MEDICARE????? So, we are greatful and the place has a great feel, as well as many of you have said you really like this new space we have created. Thank you. We are always looking for better ways to serve our patients, and feel that this new space will allow us to do that. We look forward to everyone stopping by and taking a look. We are considering a "new office" grand-opening sometime before the end of the year........give us your thoughts. Make it a great day as always!

September is "Chiropractic Awareness Month"

Date: August 26, 2010 | Time: 11:10am | Posted By: DrRandallMoore

September is Chiropractic Awareness Month! September is an important date to all Chiropractors as this month in 1895 is when the "birth" of Chiropractic was.

The first "Chiropractic" adjustment was given to a man in Davenport, IA by the name of Harvey Lillard who was the janitor of a Doctor named DD Palmer. Mr Lillard was deaf, well mostly, and upon examinination, Dr Palmer found no physiological problem with his ears, however found his spine to have been "misaligned" just inbetween the shoulder area. Upon using his reasoning to "adjust" this misaligned area, Dr Palmer used his hands to help guide the vertebra back into place..........and move it did. After a couple times of doing this, Mr Lillard noted that he was able to hear again slowly. The ironic part was that people actually started coming from all over the world to Davenport, IA to see Dr Palmer hoping he had found a cure for hearing loss. This was in fact not the case. Dr Palmer did find however, that many ailments within the body can often be related to spinal issues if there is one. Does this mean that ALL problems come from the spine and need adjusting...........certainly not, however there are many that do and unfortunately do not get attended to....................hence, September is Chiropractic "Awareness" month.

Modern science has been able to reason why that particular adjustment helped Mr Lillard to regain hearing as that region of the spine where he was badly misaligned (Subluxated) has much control over nervous messaging and blood flow back up into the head and hearing apparatus.....................shut down the blood and nerve flow into your arm and watch it die, remove that obstruction to the normal flow of blood and nerve, and watch it regain life just as with his ears or any other body part affected this way. For interested persons there is much research on Chiropractic, by many MD's such as Drs Windsor, DeNagy, Pero, Suh, and more that relate the imortance of Chiropractic Adjustive treatments for many conditions.

It really is that simple and that is why Chiropractic cures nothing! We only restore the integrity of the spine and nervous system so that all those messages flow more like they are supposed to. Doing that is how it works, as the body is always completely capable of healing itself. You restore that ability and then health restores on its own. The body cures...................there is no cure in Medicine or Chiropractic alike. A pound of medicine or 100 adjustments will never cure any body that is not "able" to essentially do the work on its own..........................Medicine and Chiropractic alike can only help to find the best means by which to "aid" the body in self-correction. The "cure" is within, always has been and always will be!

So........this month we are honoring the body's natural ability to heal through Chiropractic Awareness. ALL CONSULTATIONS will be at no charge in September. We do this so that patients "know and understand" their options for health. Chiropractic and Medicine are both great tools (that in my personal opinion should do a much better job of working together for patients), but like any tool, is made for a specific job. Car Accidents - Some Things To Consider

Date: August 23, 2010 | Time: 11:56am | Posted By: DrRandallMoore

Just had another Car Accident Patient come in the door. Unfortunate to see people just after an accident more worried about costs than anything else. Of course, your HEALTH is what comes FIRST! So yes, you should always get checked out! I don't mean by the Hospital necessarily, however auto accidents slower than 10 MPH..................yes 10MPH have been documented to elicite some damage to the body, which makes sense once you even consier how much a car weighs vs. your body and then also consider if that 2,000 + pound vehicle was moved even (1) foot of distance.

Here are some quick tips and things to consider for car accidents:
(not necessarily placed in any particular order of importance)
1. Always trade information with the other driver
2.I recommend always calling a local officer on scene
3. take pictures..........most phones have picture capability these days
4. Find a local witness if possible or realistic.
5. Make sure you are safe off the road and won't get hit by another vehicle first...........yes you may move your vehicle, simply notify the officer as to the need for safety.
6. If in doubt, call an ambulance to get medical evaluation, safe is always better than sorry when you're uncertain.
7. If your not broken, then get to your Chiropractor, and likely your massage therapist, to start working on any issues you may be having, whether your consciously aware of them yet or not!
Again, safe is better than sorry when it comes to your health and well-being.

* Gems:
a) Consider that accidents generally "elevate" our bodies with that kind of force, in this case, a low-placed head rest could almost be more dangerous than beneficial as when the body raises, the headrest now can act as a fulcrum to "whip" the head back over, creating more damage to the cervical spine. THEREFORE make certian that as you sit at rest in your vehicle, he head rest should be felt when leaning back to near the top of the head. Goofy looking or not, in an accident this can make the difference between "whip lash" and your head stopping and minimizing damage to that precious neck or yours!
b) DON'T NOT GET THE CARE! Most commonly I hear patients tell me that they didn't get checked because they didn't know if their auto insurance policy would cover the charges. As of january 1, 2009, ALL auto policies are mandated to have a minimum "Medical payments" provision of at least $5000, unless you choose to opt out of that particular coverage. This means that all though you are smart to check your policy coverage, on average, you will have $5000 of coverage for heatlh care ( whether it's the Hospital, or your Chiropractor). Personally, I choose to actually increase my "Med Pay" coverage on my car to at least $25, 000 as this is very beneficial if I get into an accident no matter who was at fault, and it generally only increased my premiums around $20 or less per six months................a no brainer! <view entire article>

Ear Infections

Date: August 18, 2010 | Time: 11:38am | Posted By: DrRandallMoore

I had a 2 year old come in to me a week ago on his 6th course of antibiotics due to recurrent ear infections. The mother quizically asked me how Chiropractic could possible help with ear infections since she knows that I see a lot of children.

A question tendered this way tells me that unfortunatly like all too many parents out there, that they don't readily consider Chiropractic for their kids health because they see it as a painrelie tool. Of course, as usual I would say this is furthest from the truth.

Here's how it works, so consider this:
There generally is no rogue bacteria involved in an ear infection. There is generally subluxation in the childs upper neck, just at or below the skull. Children are more prone to ear infection as their little heads are more "round" than an adults "oblong" head; what this means is that an adults ear canal will more naturally drain with gravity than a childs. If there is any subluxation in the neck or in the cranial bones for that matter (yes........they can misalign slightly as well) then this tends to also limit the normal fluid flow in the ears. Without normal flow, what do you think happens............that's right.......where there in no flow there is an increased opportunity to allow bacteria to grow...........just like that fish tank with the broken pump that you never clean.......it ends up mucky and green and all you need to is restore flow and balance to make it healthy again............or wait, maybe some fish antibiotics would be easier? Afterall, that would require less effort.

In uncomplicated ear infections, Chiropractic is actually one of the most well-known treatment modalities with some of the highest success stories.

Things to look out for:
*Tugging at the ear
*General Malaise (tired and fatigued)
*Fever (Don't knee jerk the Ibuprophen here, fever can actually be beneficial, check with
your Chiropractor, GP or Pediatrician first)

Things to consider doing:
*Generally, take the kiddo off the cow's milk immediately. It isn't helping things
*Get the ear looked at. I look into ears and eyes all the time in my practice. Look, and find
out what's going on.
*If necessary, an Adjustment can do wonders. Along with an adjustment, manual
manipulation of the ear, lymphatic system can also stir things up to start healing........
..... I teach my parents how to do everything but the adjustment at home on their own
to help their uncomfortable child.
* There are many OTC oil blends such as Olive, grape seed, etc. that are fantastic, however
you must have the ear looked into first as putting oil into a perforated ear drum is never
recommended!
*Reconsider the antibiotics, yes, sometimes necessary in the worst cases occassionally,
however this in no longer considered the standard of care by the American Academy of
Pediatricians. For that matter, niether is the use of Tubes.
*There are many Homeopathic remedies that work wonders as well, check with your
Chiropractor, Hoeopath, or Naturopath on this one.
* Basically, take a conservative approach to allowing the body to heal itself or a treatment
that supports good self-healing. <view entire article>

Our Construction Dust

Date: August 12, 2010 | Time: 9:04am | Posted By: DrRandallMoore

Please pardon our dust during construction! Temporarily we are using (2) seperate rooms for operations. Adjusting is at the N.W. corner of the building while administration and Massage remain at their usual location. We will finalize our buildout into the new space in early - mid September, so only 4 more weeks. At that time all entry and exit from our facility will be directly in the common area where the restrooms are located at the south of buliding.

Also, our hours are moving FROM 9-12 and 3-6, TO 9-1 and 4-6. This will allow for more of you to come get adjusted on your lunch hour.

We appreciate your patience with the changes at the moment and look forward to quickly resuming normal operations in our new space. <view entire article>

Pediatric Chiropractic

Date: August 9, 2010 | Time: 2:39pm | Posted By: DrRandallMoore

Chiropractic is for Kids Too!!!
There are those that have never heard of the idea of Pediatric Chiropractic, this is unfortunate as when all the contact numbers are listed up on the fridge for Emergency, Doctor, Pediatrician, Poison Control, and the like................there should absolutely be a space for Chiropractor as well! Could it really be that an infants delicate nervous system is any less important than Dad's, just becuause Dad has "low back pain?" Absolutely not! If we change our paradigm of health to include the importance of the nervous system and its maintenance for the total health of the person, rather than strictly valuing pain levels, then suddently we realize the importance of care we perhaps had not considered prior, such as Chiropractic for our Kids. Personally I see children daily in my office, because there are more and more parents that are better informed to understand why Chiropracti is an integral part of their childrens health an well-being. Children are commonly seen by Chiropractors for many conditions such as 1. Ear Infections
2. Cholic 3. Gastric Reflux 4. Headaches 5. Torticollis (Wry Neck) 6. Difficulty Nursing, and much more. There is plenly of research on this topic and I invite you to access it at http://www.icpa4kids.com/. <view entire article>

Stinkin Thinkin

Date: July 27, 2010 | Time: 9:48pm | Posted By: DrRandallMoore

In Chiropractic we refer to the blockage of normal energy flow within the nervous system via the spine as..........subluxation. We recognize that there are primarily (3) forms of stress that will cause "subluxation." Subluxation = diminished healing, diminished health, etc. because there is diminished homeostasis...........or your ability to efficiently adapt to your environment (i.e. you shiver when its cold, get a fever to heal an illness.............yes, fever is normal and good 99% of the time!)

Subluxation is caused by: negative thoughts, traumas, and toxins. Guess which one we see the most of in any health institution? Nope, not those nasty car accidents and injuries causing back pain. * It's the "stinkin thinkin!" Therefore in Chiropractic circles we say that that largest "subluxtion" is almost between the patient's ears! How could any person ever perceive better health if they can't at least initially conceive the idea in the first place. If you can't visualize something, obviously you will never have it. Any person that is ill, MUST at least "hope" and conceive of the idea that they could be healthy and that they would choose health, rather than complaining about the same old problem. The answer to a problem seldom ever exists at the level of the problem. Often the idea of something different being possible with a little willingness on the part of a patient is all it takes to generate the catylst of a change towards better health and therefore a better life! <view entire article>

Swine FLU concerns

Date: October 14, 2009 | Time: 10:21am | Posted By: DrRandallMoore

SWINE FLU concerns ?
Rather than taking fast-tracked and speculative vaccines this year for the flu, and especially for the SWINE flu, I would like to encourage my patients and everyone to consider first a household item that we are all familiar with..............Vitamin D. Research is showing that decreased amounts of vitamin D in our bodies may be responsible for our increased susceptibility to the flu virus. Research is also showing that those who supplement with Vitamin D (cholecalciferol -- Vit D3) are much less likely to get ill during the flu season. Some sources, such as Dr Mercola essentially state that if enough is supplemented, then a person will effectively lower their chances of becoming ill with the flu to near zero.
The speculation here is that vitamin D is needed for the body to appropriately fight viral infections (and general immune system function), and that although the body produces Vitamin with appropriate sunlight exposure, during the darker months we don't get as much exposure to sun and therefore less vitamin D production. This follows with apparent immune-suppression, allowing us to become more susceptible. Note that this is also known to be an issue in cultures, such as some middle eastern countries, where it is standard social practice that women completely cover their bodies. This often leads to similar problems for them when it isn't even FLU season. Please remember that a suppressed immune system is the one that isn't doing it's job at 100% and turns up with an infection that is often due to some "normal" bacteria or virus that we are encountering on the daily basis anyway!
Other considerations for the FLU:

Methylene Blue:
know for years to kill viruses in the body. Full glass of H2O, (1) Tablespoon of H2O2 (peroxide), and few drops of Methylene Blue and Drink. Your Urine and tongue will be blue for a while, but choose blue urine or the FLU....it's up to you.
Homeopathics: Go to any natural foods store and ask! They will guide you as here are many.
-cold an flu spray
-Actinum Napellus
-Oscillococcinum
.............................to name just a few!
Vitamin C: about 5000mg powdered per day to help with infections.
Iodine: Kills all single-celled organisms and viruses. Take about 12-13mg per day. Sources are Kelp, i-Thyroid (R) , Iodoral (R), to name a few.
Colloidal Silver: nano particles of silver are known to kill microorganisms effectively.....even MRSA(Staph) and pseudomonas. Take about a teaspoon full a day when you feel like you could use an antibiotic......don't necessarily need daily.
Essential Oils: Common ones such as, cinnamon, clove oil, coconut oil, mikes with raw local honey as a mixture can make a very healing "herbal tea."
**Note that even Tamiflu(R) itself is primarily comprised of an asian herb called "star anise."

We hope that this information helps those interested to find natural and healthy ways of taking control of their health even in the wake of the social fear that seems to currently be taking it's toll into rushed and experimental answers that may be more dangerous than helpful.

Why Do We Get Sick In the First Place?

Date: September 28, 2009 | Time: 12:00pm | Posted By: DrRandallMoore

Consider this:

1. You are one of 100 people in a room completely enclosed from the outside with no air from the outside world. ( This room can barely hold the 100 people from its small size!)
2. The air in the room is set to "high" for full circulation!
3. There is a person in the room with the worst FLU you have ever seen and you are hoping they don't look at you, much less cough.
4. That person then begins to sneeze rampantly for a full 5 minutes!
5. Are you afraid!
6. It would be agreable to assume that the germs that person spewed out have come into contact with EVERYONE in the room over the next few minutes!
7. Are you going to get sick? Many by reflex would say YES do to fear. However, let's ask that question in a different way. As with many things, the WAY a question or idea is posed is of dire importance and can often lend to greater common sense.
8. The question re-asked: " Is EVERYONE in that room going to become sick, or even symptomatic?"
9. EVERY patient I have ever asked the question to in this manner has ALWAYS said "well, no!"
10. Second question is then WHY?
11. Most people at this time fundamentally with common sense then understand that not all people get sick from "all" germs.......otherwise we would all, always be sick!
12. The difference as my patients then tell me: Is that everyone has their own tolerance ( immune competence)!
*** If the difference is ALWAYS in each individuals competence or tolerance due to their immune systems ability at that time ( only some times do we get sick from the same germ we encounter every single day) ......................... then why don't we focus more on teaching patients how to properly care for their own health and competence with good, self-empowering ideas and tactics??????????
****More to follow later, however ponder why we would cover every symptom of a "healthy" body fighting an infection, or that we would administer every pill, potion, or shot to a person "assuming" the worst case possiblity of fear, rather than using a little "common sense." <view entire article>
